Today’s Monday New Art doubles as both my new art for Monday and my Valentine’s Day card to you all. It’s my homage to both old school vintage toy robots and old school vintage Valentine’s Day cards. Combining those two themes I bring you ‘Tino’ the Toy Robot with a Heart - his chest plate opens revealing his beating heart!! I remember being in second and third grade anxiously preparing for the Valentine’s Day festivities by giving out and receiving die-cut Valentine’s Day cards. Today’s Monday New Art is a time-tunnel trip back into those innocent days. Tino was quite the undertaking and was a true work of love for me. I really wanted to capture that old time Valentine’s Day card feel. I’ve also been wanting to draw a 1960s style vintage toy robot for the last six or seven years. I felt the time was right with the current creative spurt I’m in now; I’ve never felt so creative in my life as I have the last four or so months. I felt ready and wanting to tackle a vintage toy robot, and voilà, Tino was born. I had a very rough time with this illustration at the start. Nothing I drew seemed to feel right or capture what I was going for. After several false starts, it all just clicked into place and Tino flowed from my mind to my hand to my illustration software. I’m so happy and pleased with this drawing. I’ll be posting my process for this art piece in upcoming posts, so please stay tuned.
